Road To Recovery (Tue, 24 Nov 2009)
Lindsay Lohan may finally be taking her father Michael Lohan’s advice. According to a new report, Lindsay is now meeting with a mentor three times a week to get her life back on track. Sources say that although Lindsay and Dina Lohan were angry with Michael for leaking audio tapes in which you could hear Lindsay sobbing in what seemed like a cry for help, it did make them think twice. A source tells Life & Style magazine, "She goes two, sometimes three times a week. This is not a program or substance-abuse counselor or police officer watching over her; it's someone to talk to in a confidential state." "She knows, and everyone knows, this is a huge stepping-stone for her - get in there, talk to someone, figure out what's going on and then try to fix it. First comes the diagnosis." Finally! We’ve been saying all along that the first step is acknowledging she has a problem! At least Lindsay is becoming proactive in her own life. Source You go girl

A few days after President Barack Obama was elected as the 44th president of the United States, kids from all over the country were asked to send him letters giving him advice, making requests, and just generally being cute and hilarious. I am totally getting Thanks and Have Fun Running the Country: Kids' Letters to President Obama, and I think you should, too! Here are some particularly funny and touching excerpts:

  • "Dear President Obama, I want to tell you hi. Do you work with Santa Claus?" — Sergio Magana, age 5, San Francisco
  • "Dear President Obama, I think you should get a Labradoodle and name it Soñador (it means "dreamer" in Spanish) . . ." Lydia Sumner, age 10, Seattle
  • "Dear President Obama, I really hope you put America back together. No pressure though." — Sheenie Shannon Yip, age 13, Seattle
  • "Dear President Obama, When you are president, don't eat junk food. Junk food makes you fat. Your family shouldn't eat junk food, either, because it is not healthy. Obama, you rock." — Amy Ramirez, age 8, San Francisco
  • Enjoying these? Well why not read more.

  • "Dear President Obama, I know you want to save the earth, but people don't want to clean. . .I always dream of cleaning the world with you. . ." — Stephanie Gonzalez, age 7, Los Angeles
  • "Dear President Obama, You should not smoke when you are president! There are simple reasons. Because you will die by smoking, and then you will not be president! But I want you to be . . ." — David Lopez, age 7, Los Angeles
  • "Dear President Obama, I have a great idea for you: you should set up a special phone, a special place just for kids to call the president if they find things that are dangerous and can affect people, like someone smoking. This would be a special place for kids to talk to Barack Obama and let him know what's going on." — Dhamaril Nunez, age 9, Boston

My mother lied to me

The young graduate  at the centre of an dramatic 'paternity fraud' case, had discovered  that she have been living a lie only when they stumbled across a secret diary, it emerged last night

For 17 years Elspeth Chapman known Mark Webb was her father. But by tampering with drawers while home from a boarding school and found a diary containing a reference amazing 'from my mother with a child of another person'.

The entry related to her mother Lydia Chapman's affair with Allen Mottram in 1985, and last night Elspeth, 22, described how 'her world began to fall apart' after reading it.

She immediately phoned the man she believed was her father, seeking reassurance that she was not the love-child mentioned. But instead Mr Webb confirmed that the family life she had always taken for granted was built on a falsehood.

Miss Chapman said her 'father' told her he had discovered the previous year, in 2002, that he was not her biological parent. Mr Webb and his wife subsequently divorced, ending their troubled marriage, and a DNA test in 2004 confirmed that he was not Elspeth's father.

Since then he has tried unsuccessfully to sue his ex-wife and her lover for deceiving him over the paternity of her daughter, allegations which both Mrs Chapman and Mr Mottram have denied.

The story behind the groundbreaking fraud case emerged earlier this week when Mr Webb, 47, failed at the Court of Appeal to get permission to appeal against a county court judge's dismissal of his damages claim against his ex-wife and her lover.

peaking from Rome, where she now lives, Miss Chapman explained how the devastating truth emerged. She said: 'I was at boarding school when this all began. I was 17 years old and I remember lots of arguments in the house.

'I couldn't take it. I was home from school and was looking through some drawers and found a diary about my mum having another man's child.

'I phoned Mark straight away and he came home and he confessed everything. I was devastated. I couldn't believe it. My world began to fall apart after that.'

The English teacher, a graduate of Exeter University, said Mr Webb initially promised that nothing would change after the truth about her paternity became clear. But then he started to distance himself from her.

She said: 'He disowned me. I was just 17. He didn't want anything to do with me. After he found out he wasn't my father he just cut me off.

'I was so close to him. At the time he said nothing would change but it did and got to the point where we'd hardly speak.'

Mr Webb then started court proceedings against Mr Mottram and his 45-year-old former wife, claiming they had conspired to deceive him with 'seventeen years of lies and deceit' after Miss Chapman was conceived at a hotel in 1985.

Miss Chapman said she is still hurt by the fact he has taken her mother to court over the situation.

She said: 'I don't understand it. Nobody understands how he can be that way. I miss him but I just have to carry on with my life regardless of his actions.'

Miss Chapman, who remains close to her mother, has met her biological father Mr Mottram, and hopes to form a relationship with him in time.

'I've met him once or twice. We are not close but he seems like a nice man and I hope to get to know him better in the future.

'I'm really happy it's all sorted out. It's been a really terrible time for me and my family. Most of my teenage years were taken up with this.'

This week, in the first such case to reach the Appeal Court, Mr Webb alleged that three months after the girl was born, Mrs Chapman and Mr Mottram again met at a summer barbecue, and they sneaked away to have sex.

He claimed they discussed the baby's paternity and deliberately set out to make Mr Webb believe the girl was his daughter. Mr Webb demanded back the money he spent bringing up Miss Chapman, but lost his case.

Yesterday Mr Mottram's friends dismissed claims that he conspired with Mrs Chapman to cover up the paternity of their daughter.

A family friend, who wanted to remain anonymous, said Mr Mottram, 59, who lives in an £800,000 farmhouse in the Wiltshire village of Urchfont, was 'incandescent' that the allegations had been made public.

He said: 'Allen is a private man and is furious that this has been put in the public domain.

Elspeth Chapman

Disowned: Elspeth said the father she had known for 17 years, Mark Webb, cut her out of his life when it was revealed he was not her real Dad

'He wants to get his side across but because of legal restrictions he can't and he's finding it really frustrating because these fantastical claims have been made without him having his say.

'Allen has acknowledged he is the father but these smears against him are not on.'

Mr Mottram, a retired manager of his own IT consultancy business, said: 'I'm sorry but I'm not able to talk about it at the moment.'

Mrs Chapman, now living at a £250,000 red-brick cottage in Southampton, is said to be in shock at the actions of her ex-husband, with whom she was said to have had a 'very unhappy' marriage.

Her solicitor Nick Turner, of Russell and Co, in Malvern, Worcestershire, said: 'A very biased account based on Mr Webb's failed appeal has appeared and doesn't take into account the reality of the situation.

'The Court of Appeal confirmed the original finding that Mr Webb's case was without substance.'

At the hearing in the Appeal Court, Mr Webb's barrister, Nicholas Mostyn, QC, argued that the case raised 'profound questions' about a spouse's 'duty of candour' to his or her husband or wife.

He told the court: 'Honesty and good faith lie at the very heart of the contract of marriage.'

Mr Mostyn insisted that Mrs Chapman and Mr Mottram had 'a fixed and certain knowledge' for years that Mr Webb was not the girl's father.

He added that Mr Webb's sense of injustice was so great that he intended, if necessary, to pursue his case all the way to the House of Lords.

However Appeal Court judges ruled that his prospects of success were slim under the law as it stands and it would be 'disproportionate' to allow him to proceed with his case.

Lord Justice Thorpe, sitting with Lord Justice Aikens and Mr Justice Bennett, said: 'This whole case can be categorised as a misfortune to all those engaged in it. I would not wish to be the one to extend their misfortunes further.'
